Peterhead School competed in the Hawke's Bay Regional Interschool Teams Chess Tournament at the Hastings Sports Centre on Friday August 8th, 2008.

37 teams of four players from 15 different schools competed for three trophies (Primary, Intermediate and Secondary), and the right to represent Hawke's Bay at the National Interschool Teams Chess Tournament in September.

It was a wonderful day, with 150 chess players, lots of parents and teachers, and the fantastic members of the Hastings/Havelock North Chess Club all working together to make chess something special in Hawke's Bay.

Who could forget young Wiremu Erkell from Nuhaka School taking the microphone and making a superb impromptu thank you speech during the presentation ceremony?

Peterhead entered four teams.  Our 2 Primary teams were made up of mostly very young and inexperienced players, who were there to prepare them for future tournaments.  They were not able to keep up with the teams from other schools, but performed very well and made us proud.  Congratulations to the wonderful team from Nuhaka that will represent Hawke's Bay at the Nationals.

Our 2 Intermediate teams came 1st and 4th equal, which was a very fine effort.  Congratulations to all the players.  Four of them will be chosen to compete at the Nationals.

The winning team in the Secondary section came from Karamu High School, and included an ex-Peterhead student, William Walker-Taylor.  They will also represent Hawke's Bay at the Nationals.
